You may try software that has already been developed. I use "Ideate BIMLink" to export Revit parameters to excel. We do some calcuations then bring them back in Revit.

I understand that in the Revit API form we should encourage taking up the challange of writing up our own tool, however, this tool is very well made and might work for you. No programming needed.
