Dear Nathan,

Thank you for your query, and many thanks to all the others for chipping in and helping.

You say that you have never written code in Revit but learn fast.

Congratulations on that!

"Is it difficult?"

No, not at all. In fact, the Revit API is extremely small and simple compared with something like AutoCAD ObjectARX.

"I hear you saying this parameter addition can be accomplished with code right?"

Yes, absolutely.

Dynamo is fine. Wonderful, even. From the sound of things, though, you might want to explore and understand the underlying Revit API on its own first of all.

That will significantly empower your Dynamo.

However, with the Revit API (and Dynamo as well), I would recommend a bit of caution before just jumping in.

Do you know Revit well from an end user point of view?

Judging from your question, I would assume not.

Then you can easily create a huge amount of confusion and frustration for yourself by just jumping into the Revit API any which way.

Revit is a highly structured and reglemented BIM management system.

It has complex and mighty sets of rules and functionality that enable tremendous BIM productivity and that the Revit API tries to ensure you do not violate.

If you are not a BIM expert, you might not understand them or even guess that they exist.

Therefore:

  1. Learn a bit of Revit practice from an end user point of view first of all.
  2. Work through the Revit API getting started materials, especially the DevTV and My First Revit Plugin video tutorials. Once you are through those, you can dive deeper by working through the ADN Revit API Training Labs.

Once you have done that, please feel free to ask further questions here.

At that point, your questions will be fruitful and productive for both yourself and others.

"Others Before Self. If this answers your question, please mark this as a solution. Be generous with the Kudos!"

Thank you!

I hope this helps.

Best regards,

Jeremy
